General Appearance
The Mastiff is a large, massive, symmetrical dog with a well-knit frame. The impression is one of grandeur and dignity. Males are more massive throughout. Females should not be faulted for being somewhat smaller in all dimensions while maintaining a proportionally powerful structure.

Owning
The Mastiff needs lots of exercise and should be kept in firm shape. But you should be careful not to over exercise, especially in his first year. The Mastiff is a sensitive, tender, laid back companion.

Temperament
A combination of grandeur and good nature, courage and docility. Dignity, rather than gaiety, is the Mastiff's correct demeanor.

Did You Know
The breed is descended from the Tibetan mastiff, which was introduced into Europe by the Phoenicians. In English speaking countries the "Mastiff" is more properly described as the Old English Mastiff. In the past the Mastiff was mainly used for dog fighting, bullbaiting, and bearbaiting. The American Mastiff Club was formed in 1879, and some time thereafter disbanded. In 1920, the first Mastiff Club of America was founded and the present Club was established in 1929.
