History of the Breed:
Louis Dobermann was a tax collector and night watchman in Apolda, Thuringen (located in southern Germany) in the mid-1800's. Because of his high-risk profession, Dobermann needed suitable protection. As a result of selective breeding of vario us other breeds for temperament and intelligence, the doberman pincher was developed.
Due to their intelligence, trainability and energy, the doberman became very popular as a war dog, a herding dog, a gun dog, as well as a guard dog.
Physical Characteristics:
Doberman pinchers stand about 26-28 inches at the shoulder for males, and 24-26 inches at the shoulder for females. The doberman's head is long and wedge shaped, with alert almond-shaped eyes. The ears are traditionally cropped, but may also be left naturally floppy.
The neck and chest are well-muscled, back short and firm, and the hindquarters are rounded, with straight, muscled legs, ending in catlike feet. The tail is normally docked short.
Dobermans have a short coat which is smooth and thick. Colors are black, red, blue, or fawn, with well-defined rust markings above each eye, on the muzzle, throat, chest and all four legs and feet.
Personality and Temperament:
Dobermans are highly energetic, and need lots of room and exercise. They are very loyal and protective, and will bond closely with family members. Dobermans are also very intelligent, and learn quickly.
Despite some widely-held beliefs on the ferocity of dobermans, they are not a viscous breed. Properly bred and trained dobermans are not viscous, nervous, or shy.
Care and Grooming:
If you decide to have your puppy's ears cropped, it should be performed ONLY by an experienced vet or professional. Proper cropping, taping and care of the ears is essential to avoid serious infection and to assure the ears stand properly.
Dobermans have easy-maintenance coats, so frequent brushing is not necessary. An occasional brush and wipe is sufficient. Nails should be kept trim, and the dog should learn at an early age to sit quietly while the nails are clipped. Due to the nails being black, care must be taken not to cut the quick.
Dobermans commonly have "eye boogers," which should be wiped off daily, using a clean cloth or pet wipe. If the discharge is yellow or green, have your vet look at your dog.
Housing:
Dobermans are highly sociable dogs. This fact, and the fact that their coats are not much protection from cold weather, means they should not be outdoor dogs. (Actually, no dog should be subject to living on a chain or in a cage outside while everyone else is safe an warm inside.) They should not be left out in very cold or very hot weather for too long. A mid-sized to large fenced-in yard is perfect to allow your Doberman to run (which they LOVE to do!). Walks with your Doberman are great exercise for both your dog and you.
